DIY: gold lettered vintage plates

EAT gold vintage plates DIY

I can’t say that I’ve met a gold leaf project that I haven’t loved. It’s one of my favourite DIY weapons of choice.  When I was asked to come up with a gold DIY project for this amazing golden DIY group challenge I thought it was the perfect opportunity to do use these great vintage plates I had collected from my local thrift shop. You know what gets me even more excited than gold leaf? Transforming something old into something new. And you know what YOU should be even MORE excited about? A chance to win a $300 PayPal gift card!! You read that correctly. Keep reading to see how to make this golden piece of kitchen decor for yourself and how to enter to win $300. I’m a sucker for vintage houseware, it’s a bit of a problem. I can’t pass up a beautifully designed colourful vintage plate, especially when they’re just orphans laying all by themselves in the thrift shop. So I have this small collection that’s hanging around and I thought it would be the perfect background for a gold monogram. Hey, when you do three monogram plates it becomes a word, like EAT.

It’s not a hard project but does take a bit of precision with the stencil cutting and handling the gold leaf. You could also use gold permanent marker or spray paint if you rather and get a similar result. However, I do insist on using double sided tape and spray glue specifically for the best results. Regular glue won’t get you as crisp of a result.

Once you carefully remove the stencil, you’ll end up with a personalized vintage plate piece of art. You could always just do one letter which would look great in children’s room or on an art wall or maybe in a feminine work space. You could also use this same technique and do a shape like a heart or bird or a lightning bolt or…well you can get as creative as you like.

Pick up some display plate hangers (I got mine at the dollar store) and hang those babies up and enjoy.

    • say what!?! Well if you get addicted to gold leafing, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

  3. Hello!! What a neat project! I’m wondering if the plate you used that has the turquoise border has a pattern name on the back by any chance?? I’m in love. TIA
