GOOD EATS + DRINKS: supper club

supper club march editionI’m so happy to bring you the spring edition of Supper Club. Even though for us folks in Canada, Mother Nature seems to have missed the spring memo it sure felt like spring at our most recent Supper Club get together. For those that missed my previous event post, Supper Club is a dinner party with somewhat of a rotating guest list and location with chef Ryan Su, the founder of Gastrunamy leading the culinary decisions. It’s a group effort where we all work and cook together to pull together a meal that we enjoy with a side of laughs, good conversation and lots of wine. Keep reading to see how this beautiful spring table came together and all the good things we got to eat and drink.

I hosted at my loft and decided to do something a little extra special and spring-like with the table setting and send some spring karma to the weather gods. Overall this is a very budget friendly table setting but I couldn’t resist springing for the bouquet of ranunculus’. They are my favourite after all. Then I dug into my cabinet full of vintage and thrifted goodies and decided to go with this combo coloured glasses to use as mini vases and candle holders.

Actually let me rewind a bit. I get excited when I’m talking about flowers and vintage glasses. The first step is creating this really simple but impactful (and practical) table runner. The truth is that I don’t have place mats that I love and I hate covering the whole table with a table cloth but the table does need some protection. So kraft paper to the rescue! Honestly, it’s like the crafters version of duct tape. All I did was use some white craft paint and make a simple leaf-like pattern down the centre to create a sweet handmade look.

I decided to go a bit more casual and just do self-serve cutlery in the middle of the table. Ok, maybe I just really loved how my new gold flatware looked all together in those vintage glass jars. How delicious is this colour combo? Beat that blah winter.

Once the table was done it was time for the main event, the food & wine! Here was our menu for evening that Ryan put together.

supper club menuThe sun set and as people started to arrive we enjoyed some appetizers and Union Wines‘ refreshing rose and Gold white . If a refreshing white & rose doesn’t scream spring and summer I don’t know what does.

I brought out my famous homemade hot pepper jelly (recipe to come shortly) and super soft and delicious goat cheese. A delicious combo.

Then it was time to get down to working for our food. Ryan handed out knives and jobs like it was it nobody’s business, although it looks like Maya and Angelica don’t mind. It may have something to do with the glasses of wine that were always close by.

A stylish cook is…..a stylish cook. Things got serious in the kitchen when the apron mafia was formed. Angelica is NOT messin’ around in that striped number.

The thing with Supper Club is no matter how early we start and organized we (think) we are, we never seem to eat before 11pm. We’re very European like that.  But we have a good time getting there and the food eventually does end up on the table so that’s all that matters. Here was the delicious 4 course meal we got to enjoy:

supper club dessertAren’t you just full looking at all those delicious dishes?! It definitely felt more like a fresh spring meal which is a nice change even if we can’t enjoy it outdoors just yet. Damn, that chocolate mousse was soooooo good! The perfect way to end the meal. We want to say thank you so much to our friends at Union Wines for suppling us with the drinkable portion of the meal. We thoroughly enjoyed the full selection including their Noir and Red but really thought the White, Rose and Gold were especially great with this menu. Check out the LCBO website to see which location near you carries Union’s great selection. You can also follow Union Wines and Gastrunamy on Twitter to keep up with their latest delicious updates.

Bon appétit friends!

  1. Looks like a perfect dinner party – I love your table settings, your menu choices and the wine looks like one I need to try! We’re always looking for new wine choices – thanks for the recommendation!

  2. The meal looks very appetizing. It must be a wonderful experience to collectively share the fruits of your labour. Preparing the meal certainly is much more pleasant with the social aspect.
This is a great way to build community.

I must pick up a bottle of Union next time and try them out. I love the simplicity of the label, I hope the wine is just as yummy!
