kitchen open shelving / The Sweet EscapeSo my kitchen makeover is kicking it up in high gear these days. My freshly painted kitchen cupboards are up and I’ll have an update soon on my lights. I’m in love. I stared at them all afternoon after the electrician left. The counters and backsplash are happening this week. I’m just crossing my fingers that nothing goes wrong. Worst case, Nothing ever goes wrong with these things right? The biggest jobs are behind us now though, at least. Plumbing can be quite a monumental project, depending on what you want to do, so professional services are probably the way to go. Check out Sarkinen Plumbing in Portland and other plumbing experts in your local area when the job is too big to tackle alone.

So once all these logistical details get taken care of (the kind you can read more about it here, with the electrics and all that) it’s time for the really fun part. The styling! If you remember this kitchen mock up – you can see that I’m planning on opening up a few cupboards to create an open shelving nook. It’s something I’ve always wanted but I’m pretty realistic about knowing that I could never pull off a full open kitchen. The key to open shelving is having well curated and styled pieces. I have the great kitchenware to show off, and I think I’m going to add some more pieces such as a coffee machine from www.nellaonline.com … just like those fancy ones they use in top end restaurants! But to finish it off, I just need a little help editing. Here’s 12 kitchens with a pop of open shelving that I love.

There’s something I like in all of these. They all have some element of style I can relate to and ok fine I threw in one all white one that will totally unrealistic for me.

I love the vintage art on these shelves.

I love the idea of having some kind of plant/green element. kitchen open shelving / The Sweet Escape

I’m loving the handmade element on these jars. What a great way to turn something so ordinary into something special. kitchen open shelving / The Sweet Escape kitchen open shelving / The Sweet Escape kitchen open shelving / The Sweet Escape kitchen open shelving / The Sweet Escape

A pop of one colour is really working here. Oh and it happens to be my favourite colour which I love. But since my cupboards are now turquoise I may want to think about another accent colour. kitchen open shelving / The Sweet Escape kitchen open shelving / The Sweet Escape kitchen open shelving / The Sweet Escape

I love this eclectic mix of dishware and quirky vintage goods. I’m a sucker for a bird under any circumstance.

kitchen open shelving / The Sweet EscapeThere’s so many great ideas out there. I think my biggest problem will be not having enough shelving for everything I want to showcase. Let the editing begin! Before I leave to pick up the kids from school… I didn’t mention that you can actually make your own shelving at home using components similar to what Maker Pipe offer! But don’t forget the wooden board – otherwise, you’ll have a frame and no storage space! That’s all from me today guys, have a good one :-)

  1. Cant wait to see what you do!
We had a similar layout (albeit much smaller) As we had cabinets on either side of the shelves, we were able to put up something rather chunky and heavy. We used solid 2″ thick stained pine from Downtown Lumber. We cut the wood to size, sanded, stained and poly’ed before install. They were super easy to install as we could just screw them in from the sides of the cabinet. Here’s a pic: http://www.storefrontlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/IMG_2697WEB.jpg

  2. White seems to be popular. That gives it a clean, fresh look and provides background for any colour.
