If you’ve been to a Shoppers Drug Mart lately you’ve probably seen this beautiful face staring back at you. I wanted to share my latest beauty art direction project with you today. I have to say, this is probably one of my favourites from the many looks I’ve art directed for Shoppers. It’s for their current Beauty Breakthrough campaign and the objective was to be fresh, hip and new and I think we nailed it.
The eye makeup is so fresh and bold, perfect for spring and I love her easy casual hair look. The lighting and white background make it feel vibrant and fresh. I’ll be honest, the model made all our jobs pretty easy that day. She’s gorgeous.

Breanna is a true natural beauty and can pull off pretty much anything so it was fun to explore some bold spring colour palettes.
The shot is definitely about the makeup but it’s still important to have whatever clothing & accessories that are visible match the look. I did the styling for this look and decided to go with some bright and bold colours & patterns. The bright yellow really popped with the makeup and the bright lighting. You really never know if something works until you get it on set. Things you think will be perfect may just not work and things you weren’t sure about may end up being the best. Options, options, options. Obviously if this was a fashion shoot there would be about 10x the amount of clothing & accessories.
Then it’s down to business. It’s funny because it takes at least a few hours to get the look but there’s usually only a few minutes of shooting for each one. Especially when dealing with pros like John & Breanna. I’ve learned so much about lighting being on set. It’s fascinating to understand and see how light reacts and reflects to give you different outcomes. It’s part of the smoke and mirrors of photography.
There’s some playing on set but usually, when you get on a roll you don’t want to ruin it and you just go. We took a bunch of great shots that day but this was definitely the winner. I hope it inspires you to try something new and bold for spring! Natural makeup can be bold too believe it or not! If you don’t believe us, just visit Waterlilies And Company to see for yourself!
