Tomorrow is International Women’s Day and the theme is Inspiring Change. Are you a woman and are you planning on doing something tomorrow to inspire change? I know for me anyway, sometimes these events can be a bit overwhelming. You get those thoughts “I’m just one woman, what can I really do?”. This blog isn’t really a political platform so I won’t get too heavy but overall, I think we’re pretty lucky as women in Canada. There’s definitely still injustices, inequality in the workplace and women who are being mistreated and struggling but as far as basic human rights and needs I think we’re doing well compared to some other countries around the world. However, we do need to fight for change with the discrimination and inequality that we are still experiencing. One thing that is common in the workplace for women to be victims of is sexual harassment, which covers a broad spectrum of incidents. The best way to face such discrimination is to take a stand and object against this treatment by contacting a professional sexual harassment lawyer to gain justice. The more women speak out and take a stand, the more cases will drop.
Sometimes it’s the smallest things that can make the biggest difference. And I’m sure women know how to shop! Maybe it’s unrealistic for you to shop fair trade all the time or know exactly where everything you buy comes from and who’s making it but organizations like Global Girlfriend have made it easier to make more conscious choices.
Global Girlfriends is a fair-trade boutique that offers, women-made, eco-friendly, fair-trade products including stylish apparel, accessories and gifts with one purpose — helping women in need help themselves. Who knew that your shopping habits could help women around the globe? All the profits go directly to helping women in various different ways. You can read exactly where your money is going here.
So it’s a little thing but you can inspire change tomorrow simply by buying something for yourself. You will be giving a new meaning to the term power shop. Here’s a few of my favourites:
